course is planned for spring 2027. Dates and registration
information will be updated at the beginning of 2027.
About the course
Navigation training for recreational sailors
Sailing Club Syvstjernen facilitates an annual
navigation course (duelighedskursus) for Maersk
employees. The programme combines classroom-based navigation theory with
practical sailing throughout the season.
The course consists of a theoretical part and a
practical part, each concluding with an exam.
After passing both exams, you may choose to complete a sight and hearing
examination with a maritime doctor and subsequently apply to the Danish
Maritime Authority for the formal
Certificate of Competency for recreational sailors (Sønæringsbevis /
Duelighedsbevis i sejlads).

The theoretical course consists of
five Wednesday evening classes at
Esplanaden 50.
Classes run from 17:15 until approximately 21:00. The
course is classroom-based and cannot be attended online.

Theoretical exam: 12 or 13 May
Exams are held on Tuesday 12 May and
Wednesday 13 May. You must be available to attend on
one of the two evenings.

Attendance and homework
There will be homework throughout the course, and when you sign up we
expect that you intend to attend the classes and complete the exam.
Missing one class is generally manageable, provided you catch up through
self-study. We strongly recommend prioritising the final class on
6 May, as it focuses primarily on revision and exam
preparation.
The theoretical course has a maximum of 25 participants.
Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Practical training takes place throughout the sailing season following the
theoretical course.
A large part of your practical experience can be built through normal club
sailing activities, allowing you to practise alongside experienced
skippers and crew.
What will you practise?
Boat handling
Manoeuvring, steering and general control of the boat.
Man-overboard manoeuvres
Practising safe and effective recovery procedures.
Rope handling
Working safely and efficiently with lines and mooring.
Safety equipment
Correct use of the safety equipment carried on board.
Rules at sea
Applying the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
Practical seamanship
Building confidence and sound judgement on the water.

Practical exam: 19 or 26 August
Practical exams are held in the evenings on
Wednesday 19 August and
Wednesday 26 August. You will need to be available
for a couple of hours on one of these dates. The detailed schedule
will be arranged once the course is underway.
Build experience through the club
During the sailing season you can join regular club activities on a
week-by-week basis. These provide excellent opportunities to practise and
build sailing experience.

The course does not make you an experienced skipper overnight
The navigation course gives you the formal knowledge and some of the
practical skills you need, but becoming a club skipper also requires
sufficient real-world sailing experience. For someone starting without
previous sailing experience, this normally takes around
1½–2 seasons of regular sailing.

How do you sign up?
Course participants must be active members of
Sailing Club Syvstjernen.

Create a profile on the club website if you do not
already have one.

Sign up for the
Yearly Subscription
under the Membership menu and pay the annual membership
fee.

Once your membership is active, go to
Activities / Events
and register for the navigation course.

Navigation course
DKK 2,800
Includes instruction, electronic course material and examination fees
for both the theoretical and practical exams.
An electronic textbook is included in the course fee. A printed copy can
be purchased separately at the beginning of the course.
After the course
What happens once you have passed?
After passing both the theoretical and practical exams, you can continue
building sailing experience towards becoming a club skipper or choose to
obtain additional certificates and qualifications.
